When it comes to launching bombshells, Guess has a stellar record. Among their previous up-and-coming models: Claudia Schiffer (1989), Drew Barrymore (1993), Gigi Hadid (2012), and Priyanka Chopra (2013). Their latest recruit? Camila Cabello, the L’Oreal model and pop chart princess who’s had four platinum singles…despite the fact that her first solo album won’t launch until next year. “I’d never worked with a singer before,” said Paul Marciano. “I was surprised to see how much energy and excitement she brought to the set.”

The same thing is true of our interview, where the 20-year-old spoke candidly about real eyelashes, fake friends, and the timely death of the choker...

So many fashion icons have posed for Guess. Which one is your personal inspo?

My favorite Guess moment was Claudia Schiffer in that classic picture in the little black bra and bangs, and she’s, like, looking over her shoulder. It's casual but it's so sexy. [Laughing] I wish I could do that! But you know, there are a lot of images that I didn’t realize were Guess until I went to Paul [Marciano]’s office. I saw all these pictures on the wall, and I’m like, "I remember that photo! I didn’t even realize it was Guess!" But that's the thing with these campaigns; they're part of pop culture. Everyone’s seen them growing up. Definitely I did. That's why it felt like such a big deal to get this campaign.

You're shooting the ads right now, aren't you?

Yeah. I flew here this morning; I was in Vancouver yesterday! I'm talking to you in the makeup chair. I have this really cool smoky eye and my hair is like kind of up in these really little curls that have to be taken down. I have to eat before I can get dressed; that's the rule.

That's my rule, too. Is it weird to go from tour, where you're literally being you onstage, to a photo set where you're being transformed into The Guess Girl?

No, because they always make sure I feel like myself. Honestly, I’ve never not been sure about this. Luckily—and I said this before—these clothes and this makeup is literally what I would wear anyway. It feels very me.

What's the best part about being on a billboard?

You know, I just wish I had an ex-boyfriend who had a bad breakup [with me]. Then he’ll see pictures of me everywhere and be so sad! [Laughing] No, that's not true. Anyway, I haven’t found a boyfriend at all, and we haven’t broken up.

But your right, a Guess billboard is the best revenge!

It would be! But no, that hasn't happened. But I have seen posts from fans all around the world who are posing next to the billboards. They're from Spain and Italy and London, which blows my mind. It’s like the billboards in the airport, too, which is so crazy to me. It means I'll be running through an airport sometime soon, trying to make my flight on time, and I'll have to run past a giant photo of myself. That's weird.

The ads have a smoldering '80s vibe. Does that mean '90s chokers are over?

I don’t wear them anymore! I think I’m over it. I'll do a bare neck now, or like a little, really thin necklace—like a thin gold or silver chain. Maybe a heart in the middle. Something dainty and soft. No more black lines through my throat. I think we’ve over worn them. Every girl had them, and that’s when I’m ready to let my neck do something else, you know?

Can you give me life advice?

I can try!

Is there a trick for getting dressed when paparazzi are around?

Ha! Getting blitzed by paparazzi really only happens if you're in LA, to be honest with you. Maybe New York. And only if you’re out-out, at a big event or a club or something. And right now, I don’t have a lot of time to go out! I’m on tour and working on my album. I go to the [recording] studio in Vancouver, so it's not like they're camped out for me. Like, Edmonton Canada paparazzi? No. But the truth is, I like being comfortable, and so even if I know there are photographers outside, I don’t really feel like I have to change. When I go to the [tour] venues and I know fans are outside, I’ll wear sunglasses and boots, because I want to look great for them. My general thing is, if you feel cute in your outfit, then your outfit is cute.

Last question! Is there a trick for figuring out if a friend is fake?

I think the only way to know is time. I feel like there are instances and circumstances in your life that always change. You can think someone’s your friend, and it could be out of convenience, or there was something in it for them, or whatever. And a year later, something happens and you really need help, or all of a sudden they have to stand up for you, and it could be inconvenient for them or not benefit them. And they don’t have your back. And you’re like, "Ok, that friendship was circumstantial. You were only my friend when it was easy." What's hard is you can’t tell from the beginning.

So true.

So many people have disappointed me. And there’s also been so many people—not so many, but a few people who make everything worth it, stick through it, and they show loyalty. And no matter what goes down, seas or rough or calm Sunday afternoon, those are people that are worth it. You die for those people.
