Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez just did something they basically never do: make political statements. The two close friends posted Instagrams of the March for Our Lives Logo minutes apart minutes apart, declaring their support for gun control. The march is tomorrow, and 800+ events are planned nationwide.
Swift wrote: "No one should have to go to school in fear of gun violence. Or to a nightclub. Or to a concert. Or to a movie theater. Or to their place of worship. I’ve made a donation to show my support for the students, for the March For Our Lives campaign, for everyone affected by these tragedies, and to support gun reform. I’m so moved by the Parkland High School students, faculty, by all families and friends of victims who have spoken out, trying to prevent this from happening again." She disabled comments on her post.
Gomez's caption was more simple: "Protect kids, not guns! #MarchForOurLives" Comments remain enabled.
While Gomez once wore a Nasty Woman jacket last February (a nod to Hillary Clinton), Swift has never really been political in her street style or on her social media. Her biggest political statement on Twitter was her tweet in support of the women's march last year (though she did make a statement with her public sexual assault trial last summer). She also gave an interview to Time where she commended the other members of the #MeToo movement who had come forward.
It's unclear whether Gomez or Swift will be marching tomorrow. The exact amount Swift donated to the march also hasn't been disclosed yet.
